Happy Wednesday, friends! Today I’m sharing with you two books that I’ve received complimentary from BH/Lifeway to share with my kiddos and review here for you. As always, I only give you my honest thoughts of the books we receive and review. Both of today’s book have beautiful illustrations and I love them a lot. I think you will too.
Colorfull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us by Dorena Williamson and Illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu
Colorfull is a story of three friends that are different is just about every way. Granny Mac guides the children into embracing and celebrating the colorful world around them and why our differences are unique and beautiful. The kids discuss the color around them, as well as, the color differences that they all shared amongst themselves. They discuss how God made each of them to be exactly how they are because God loved color.
Colorfull does a beautiful job illustrating (through the imagery and the words) the beauty of color in the world that God created. Dorena does a beautiful job amplifying the importance of color in the world around us from the smallest details to the largest. She brings in the beauty of skin color, hair color, eyes, etc. into how God made us specifically how we are because He loves colors of all types. Her approach welcomes children to celebrate themselves for exactly who they are as God made them and celebrating the differences in those around them just the same. She encourages us all to not be “colorblind” but “colorfull” in celebrating all of our colors. I love the approach and find it extremely important.
In the back of the book, it has a guided discussion section that helps you give deeper into the topic with your own children. The guided discussion does a wonderful job helping parents navigate the conversation in a beautiful and biblical way. It comes with a verse, short discussion and questions. My children loved the discussion and I was really surprised at how deep some of their answers were. We’ve read this book several times and we love it more and more every time.
CSB Great and Small Bible (boxed): A Keepsake Bible for Babies Hardcover by Holman
This Keepsake bible is beautifully illustrated and has some extra features that make it even more special. I had a keepsake bible as a baby with just a dedication page and the bible content following. This bible takes it even further. I’m a big fan of the CSB bible because it keep things understandable without losing context. Its a excellent version for anyone. I’ve shared about the CSB benefits before here.
This keepsake bible comes in a nice, sturdy box with a bookmark string. There’s a standard dedication page, as well. Within the pages there are beautiful animal illustration that are in full color and bring a lot to the bible. At first, that’s all I thought those pages were – a fun illustration page to add to the bible. However, I quickly learned that they can be opened to document milestones for your new baby. Within these pages you can document birth stats, favorite items, first times, and more. It’s a wonderful addition to the bible and is something I haven’t seen in other baby keepsake bibles.
The Bible itself is a great size. It’s much smaller than a standard bible but is a perfect size for little hands. The pages are incredibly thin. This bible uses the standard fine page like most keepsake bibles and I feel like it could benefit from a little thicker pages. However, I don’t feel like it leaves the bible at a deficit. I do understand the need for thin pages and small text considering the need to keep the bible at a reasonable thickness. The keepsake pages are thicker pages and are great for writing on.
This keepsake bible will be one that I default to for baby gifts thanks to it’s great features and added keepsake pages. One could even say that they could use this instead of a baby book if they didn’t want to go the baby book route.
