Sophie the Fish

Saturday morning we went to Petsmart because they were going a fun ‘Finding Dory’ event that I found out about via their email. Fishbowl decorating, coloring pages and fish feeding were all the fun activities listed in the email so we decided we would go. Saturday morning arrived and we headed over to the event to surprise A. We figured we would end up with a fish at some point because it’s kind of like that whole “if you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk” thing…if you get your kid a free fish bowl…she’s going to ask for a fish. We decorated the free plastic bowl with the fish stickers and around rolled the question of getting a fish. So we looked at the Bettas…the fish perfect for a bowl but naturally they aren’t very friendly looking fish per say and aren’t the most active….then again, I’m not sure I would be either if I was stuck in a cup my whole life either but I digress.

The goldfish were a bit more cheery and were what A decided on. She picked the one she wanted and instantly named it “Sophie”. There was zero debating on a name, she instantly had it picked and that was that. So we got Sophie in her temporary fish bag home, a fake plant, some food and some rocks. Then we were on our way with a very happy kiddo. She insisted on holding her new friend on the way home and let us know that she was her best friend.

We got home, I tried to get the cheap label sticker off the tank which ended up scratching up the whole side. Super. So, I ended up back at the pet store to get a new glass bowl but ended up with a filtered tank which happens to have 8 different color options. So tank set up was probably in the top 3 favorite things of A’s Saturday.

Sophie the fish has the life.

A is thrilled with her new friend, is adamant about feeding her twice a day and talking to her. Plus – she’s got a tank a bit too big for her with more colored lights than a fish could ever want. Saturday night ended with A asking if Sophie was asleep which we answered like any good parents would “of course Sophie is sleeping, you should be too!” And she was asleep 5 minutes later. Sunday started with “is Sophie awake now?!” And we said “yep, she’s an early riser.”

She’s had some interesting conversations with Sophie and she talks back when she opens her mouth. Imagination is the best ever.

Today’s morning conversation went like this:

“Hi Sophie…the sun is up again. I can feed you again now…I’m sure you’re hungry. I’m hungry. I’ll get mommy so I can feed you!”

So here we are….with a new best friend in our house named Sophie…and thank goodness we got the filtered tank because I’m not looking forward to the “Sophie went to live with Jesus” conversation.

Awesome! I love the tank! I told Reba maybe when mommy looks at all of her tanks in basement we could see about getting her some fish:)
