A couple weekends ago we went to the Denver Zoo with my grandparents. It had been a couple years since we had gone with A and it was a great opportunity to go. Right now they have a Lego exhibit with dozens of Lego built animals and they were a blast to see. We got to see a lot more things this time they we ever have before which was a lot of fun. We were just in time for a ZooKeeper Kids event. The kids got to help make a habitat for Guinea Pigs and then watch the Guinea Pigs “Chipotle” and “Bella” (i think?) explore their new home. A had a ton of fun doing that.
Then we were right on time to see the Penguins get fed. We learned about how usually penguins know when they are full so there aren’t usually food aggression problems and how their fish are supplemented with vitamins to make sure they get everything that they need.
We watched the elephant show like we got to do a couple years ago. The Toyota Elephant Passage gives the elephants so much more room to explore. The shows are really kind of neat because whichever elephant comes over at the time is the one they give treats to (lettuce, etc.). It’s all totally free will and the elephant can walk away at anytime and the show ends. We really liked that they are welcome to show up or not show up anytime that they want.
After we ate lunch we saw the zebras – including the baby Zebra, Denali! We then explored the Big Cats, Giraffes and the Sea Lion & Polar Bear exhibits. There was a really neat We were some how right on time to see the Sea Lions get fed too which was fun to see. A was so much more captivated with the zoo this time around now that she was older. It was ridiculously hot that day though. Naturally, the one day we decided to go to the zoo ended up being the hottest day of the week. Next time we will be planning better.
Our last stop was the primates and we had a lot of fun see those too. At that point in the trip we were pretty over being out in the heat but the 5 year old orangutan that was putting on quite a cute little show inside the exhibit was pretty entertaining.
We loved this trip of going to the zoo (minus the heat) and the legos made the visit so much more fun. I’m pretty sure we probably missed some but they were integrated so well into the zoo. There were Lego lily pads in the different water based exhibits, and so many throughout the whole zoo. The Denver Zoo is one of our favorites because they just love the animals so much. They told us while we were there that they recently got rid of some of their animals to other zoos to make larger exhibits for some of the animals that need bigger spaces to roam!
It was so great to see A interact and get excited about the animals. She told us that the baby zebra was her favorite. I love going through these experiences with our kiddos. B was in my ring sling during the day so he had a pretty boring day (ha!) but I can’t wait to see what he thinks of the zoo as he gets older. I know A enjoyed it when we went around 1 year and this year she loved it even more. It’s such a joy to both Ryan and I getting to experience things like this with our kiddos and see the world through their eyes and their experiences!!
