The few weeks ago Ryan was reading a blog post of mine and then out comes “That’s funny. You write just like you talk.” When I asked why that was funny and what exactly that meant he said “English teachers teach you not write like you talk, and you write like you talk.”
To me that was a “mission accomplished” moment because some time ago I read a tweet mentioning something about it driving people crazy when they read someone’s blog and they are different in person, I asked a couple friends that read my blog if I’m the same person in both places and they said I, in fact, was the same – maybe a little less witty and sacrastic but overall, yep the same person. For whatever reason I didn’t ask Ryan his thoughts, but long after I had even read that and the thought had long passed I had the answer that concreted it. So, here’s my public apology.
I would like to apologize to my readers that read my writing with the hopes that if they met me one day maybe, just maybe, I would be different than I am on my blog. I’m not. This is me, writing just like I talk. What you read is what you get, although I might be a bit more sarcastic and witty in person – that is for you to decide. In fact, if you met me in person depending on the day I could be a little bit more flustered than my writing on the blog is, so really continuing to read my blog might just be doing yourself a favor. If you like wit and sarcasm you may want to avoid my previous statement, but you may want to indeed be doing yourself a favor if you don’t like people that tend to be a little bit more honest than preferred I’m slightly more conscious about what I post on the internet than what I say out loud. It’s true.
English Teacher and English Majors – sorry about that last paragraph you might just hate me now or are teetering on idea of hitting the unsubscribe button. Sorry.
Sorry to the naysayers that hate the word “y’all” I really do say that in person, except with this tinge of an accent that Ryan seems to think I have and says is accentuation once I’ve had a beer or two. I also say goofier things in real life that I don’t say on the blog because well, let’s not be too authentically weird on the blog…right? mmmkay.
So, I’ll wrap this public apology up real quick. Sorry I’m really probably not very sorry that I write like I talk, it’s up to you to decide if that’s a good thing or not. What you read … is what you get.
