Me & Personality Tests Aren’t Friends.

Since last week I gave you a sneak peek of the answers during the interview process that I received from applicants.  So I decided I should give you a little tidbit of info that you didn’t already know about me.

Every time I have ever interviewed for a job, I have been offered it.

Which is great news, it makes things a little bit easier for me, and I guess I’m pretty lucky in that aspect.  However, back sometime around mid-2007, I decided I wanted to look for a new job and I had applied at a couple of places around Greeley, the town that Ryan and I were currently living in.  I was at the local mall applying for some jobs when I ran into our friend “Monk” who worked at a well known athletic shoe store.  I ran in said hello, told him I was around looking for jobs when he said to me “You should totally apply here. We are hiring and could use a good looking female on staff – go online fill out the app and I’ll put in a good word for you with the manager.”

I went home, filled out the application, took the personality test and waited.
And Waited.
Nothing.

Finally I followed up with Monk and asked him if he had talked to his boss.
He proceeded to tell me – I didn’t pass the personality test.

What….?

I assumed he was kidding, so I said – you are kidding right? You can’t be serious…

He then told me that he was indeed 100% serious and he was just as shocked as I was.

Ryan thought it was hilarious.  I, of course, had to tell my dad as well because I was dumbfounded, and he said something funny like … “well! your personality has always been a bit questionable…”

Anyways, when  I found out from Monk that information it made total sense.  I had never gotten a call back on a job that I filled out a personality test.  However, I have never not gotten a job that I applied and interviewed for.

I think Ryan says it best… “You aren’t black and white enough. You don’t tell people what they want you to hear. You are too honest.”

It’s true. When there is a question on the personality test like “Do you believe what people tell you?”  Well – if someone returned a pair of shoes that looked clean and they said they didn’t wear them but around the house…yes. I would.  But, if someone came to me and said they didn’t wear them but around the house but they clearly were worn for the last month…no. I wouldn’t.  How would I answer that question “Sometimes”.
Apparently that’s wrong.

So now…what did I do after that little lesson thanks to a famous shoe store…? Hit “Close” after I learned that it had a personality test. Hmpf.

Good thing I’m a business owner now right?

That is the best thing about you! That is what makes our friendship work! Because when I need to know the truth about something whether I want to hear it or not I ask you! I love you and glad that you are honest!

How can someone tell someone else’s personality from an online application without talking to said person face to face….
