I’m not really sure where to start.
I suppose we will start 12am, when we were still at our house in Topeka cleaning. Yep, when we clean a house we clean the thing spotless, we lost a deposit once many years ago and that won’t be happening again.
1:14 AM – We leave the Topeka house and head up to my dad’s so that we can sleep.
5:13AM – knock on the door and it’s my dad saying, we are ready to pull out and it the road, you up!!?? I was in that moment.
((OH! Didn’t tell you, dad ended up helping us move because Budget literally went up 400% compared to last year, I was then told it was “because of a little something called ‘the recession’ .. which was comical because 400% doesn’t count to be thrown on the recession and we were already told by one guy that they needed more trucks in KS than CO so we had to pay more. SO after ALL THIS DRAMA, I talk to one more person and she says, “Oh, we are blacked out that weekend, & only rent our trucks out to commercial companies that weekend due to the need for them for the pyrotechnic shows.. Really?! – SO plan B was to use my dad’s truck and trailer pull our stuff out there, unload it then turn around back to KS drop off the truck, and drive back in Ryan’s car. Dad vetoed that idea telling us that was crazy and it was no problem for him to just drive out there.) )
So, we get up and around, and lose Link in dad’s shop, find him under the furnace – finally get him out, the off we go to get gas and my Starbucks. It’s a MUST with Roadtrips.
So, in the drive thru I’m second in line…I have 3 cats and 1 dog (wyatt was with Ryan), I’m sure I’m guarding my window when Link springs over my arm and out the window.
Out.the.freaking.window. and into the drive thru lane. He dashes under the car in front of me, I roll up my window, jump out of my car, then they pull forward clueless- just missing his head! *cue mini-heart attack* I go running my the window telling the window guys I’ll be back for my coffee in a second, I’m chasing Link down, finally getting ahold of him his tail is the size of a raccoons, his ears are pinned to his head, he is hissing and screaming as I come back to the window – on foot – trying to explain what the hell just happened and that I don’t normally carry cats with me in my car, and that its because we are moving to another state, and I’ll be right back for my coffee.
I get back in my stinkin’ car afterchucking placing Link in the back seat, Ryan calls me “Where are you?” I say, “the damn drive thru and Link just jumped out the window gotta go.”, then I drive up to the window and say,
“Hello again! I’m ready for my coffee this time. Ugh, I’m sure that’s the weirdest thing you have ever seen working here.”
I get the response, “Oh we have seen much worse.”
It was one of those, kinda wanna know but then really kind of don’t want to know type of things.
Anyways, onto the road again, with now – 2 dogs, and 3 cats in my 4Runner – Ryan was in the Starbucks parking lot gives me Wyatt so he could have room to lay down, etc.
Off we go. No big things that occurred on the way, minus Ryan’s nagging about my driving. Finally I told him to quit nagging realize that its the middle of freakin’ western KS & the wind is like 45 mph and to lay of or I was going to lose him so he couldn’t follow and nag.
We get to Colby, his last stop to find fireworks we can’t get in Colorado.
He catches back up in Limon, and we come to our happy little home….
…or so we thought.
We open the door to our new home to find, a damn mess!!! The place wasn’t clean, it smelled, couldn’t get ahold of the landlord now. I AM NOT HAPPY.RYAN IS NOT HAPPY.

A/C doesn’t work. Garage doesnt work or lock. We unload everything into the garage, we say our goodbyes and thank yous to my dad for helping … meanwhile trying to get ahold of the Landlord.
Finally Ryan talked to him and he said if we don’t like it don’t move in but he was here when the carpet cleaner was here and the tile cleaner, and when he left it was in tip top shape. RIGHT!
Then said, well gotta run we can meet tomorrow morning then hung up on Ryan.
By this point I’m livid, Ryan is livid and blaming himself for putting us in this position because he pushed so hard for this house. Etc. We load up the 3 cats, 2 dogs and spend the night at Ryan’s parent’s house. We had less than 3 hours of sleep in 36 hours and we had to sleep.
Next morning, we get a call from the Landlord he has someone coming to put a dishwasher in and fix the A/C. He didn’t see what the problem was with the cleanliness of the home though. Anyways, we got him to take $$ off of our rent so we could clean to house to our standards, etc. and so things turned out in our favor and the house is clean – big thank you to my brother and his wife who spend the whole rest of that day helping us clean – SIL spent over an hour cleaning the stove sides, top, everything for us. That’s how bad it was. Blech. We have photos but I’m not going to share them because they are just that blech.
A/C wasn’t fully fixed until Monday the 4th – there was a trip in the wire causing the A/C & Furnace to come on AT THE SAME TIME! Not good for a cool house. But things are good now, after the 1.5″ of gross was scraped off the condenser and the wiring was fixed we have a cool house, and our stuff – most of it, has its place! 🙂
My goodness, Kristina, so many hassles and misadventures. I’m so glad Link didn’t get lost or hurt! I hope you, your husband and your fur bunnies are all getting settled in now and that all continues to go well for you.
Hi Kristina. That was quite a little adventure you posted about there my friend! Must have been a bit of a scare when you nearly lost Link! That is awful when you have spent so much time cleaning your place, and then move into a grubby place. It happened to me way, way back when my husband was in the Army. We had cleaned our apartment in Germany until everywhere gleamed, before it was inspected. Then, after a long drive back to Germany with all our wordly possessions, we come to this house and opened the door! I could have cried. It was really dirty, so they paid us to clean it, but that really wasn’t the point after a long drive with our two young daughters as well! One day you will look back and laugh at this! Glad you’re getting straight now though.
Sorry, that should have read !long drive back to ENGLAND!!!
Thank goodness you guys are young and could do all this yourselves. I’m sorry it started out so awful but it’s all behind you now and you’re in your new home. So happy for you and your Dad is a saint!!!
Yikes! Moving days are not good days anyway, but you had a double dose of trouble! Hope it’s all behind you now!
Ohmygosh. Talk about a crazy moving experience. 🙁 Sorry you ran into so many troubles! I hope it starts to feel like home very soon. 🙂
Oh that is just rotten when people don’t clean. You can feel good about yourselves for doing the ‘done’ thing! I’m glad you had family around to help and a place to sleep. Traveling with pets can be a huge challenge, thank goodness Link survived!
Now you get to focus on making the house your home!
Hugs~
How awful that the home wasn’t clean! Glad you are safe and sound, though, and hope everything is great now!
I have been thinking of you guys; I’m glad to read that you have finally arrived and are getting settled 🙂
Moving can be stressful, that’s for sure! Landlords can be stressful too … hopefully the tension resolves itself with your new one.
