A Slightly Frustrating Surprise

Last Thursday night we got a message from a Realtor by the name of John. We had met him the weekend before when we got 24 Hour notice that he would be coming by for a “market analysis”. Well the call Thursday night was to tell us the owner of the house has decided to put the house back on the market, and what we “needed to know” and was “expected of us”.

Here is a little history – we started renting the house in January. The owner had it on the market and had no luck so he decided to rent it. We offered up sign a one year lease, however, the owner said he would be just fine with only making us sign a 6 month lease then going month to month. Not once did the “we might put the house back on the market” talk come up.

So Friday morning I called back Mr. John Realtor and although frustrated I was very calm and nice about the situation. I was inquiring about the requirements we needed to assist with, etc. Then I asked, “I’m assuming you could like us to leave the house once we let the agent and potential buyers in?”
He replies with – “any questions you have – put yourself in the reverse roll, and you can answer any questions you have yourself.”

Umm, excuse me? Did you really just say that? We have to change our life around to accommodate this, I’m being understanding and you just seriously responded to me like that?!

So, the nice, understanding side started to fade and a bit of my Taurus side came out. I then proceeded to tell the guy,
” You know what this is a HUGE pain in the ass (yes I can say that! It’s my blog), and if we would have known this was a possibility we most likely wouldn’t have rented this house!”
He then tried to make excuses for the owner and say he probably didn’t plan on it when we signed the lease. Yeah right! I didn’t just fall off the idiot wagon!!!

This guy is trying to sell the house while we are paying his mortgage – I can’t blame him but a heads up would have been nice.

Mr. John Realtor had to put in his place about notice too. He thought the agents could just call us a few hours before.
Uh…not gonna work, 24 hour notice buddy – and it’s per our lease. So take that!

So, Mr. John Realtor says he is wanting to come the next day to measure and take pictures. Ugh, we keep a clean house (remember Ryan can be/ is a clean freak) but still inconvenience much? This means extreme clean!
So since I naturally had to work the next day I told him I would need to find out if Ryan can make that work.

He could, so I called back Mr. John Realtor and said it would be fine, then he says, ” OK! I’ll be there at 10:30a.”
Then I say… ” Now wait a minute – what photos are you going to be taking? What rooms? We need to make sure they are ready.”
He proceeds to tell me then says, “oh and that room you use for storage – I get we all need a junk room but you should organize that before showings start because people will want to see in there.”
The one room we put stuff in and had no plans of opening the door again until we moved out. The one room that’s a hopeless mess.
Awesome.

Needless to say, we won’t be going month to month once our lease is up at the first of July.

What a pain!!

That really sucks. I rent my house in CT and I can’t sell it right now because there’s no equity but if I had to, I’d definitely offer to my tenants first and then as a rental property second. Good luck!

cute new look. I’d double check your lease and triple check the renter/landlord laws in your area. Sounds borderline illegal.

It’s legal. We just have to be given 24 hour notice before each visit and the sell of the house just can’t be closed and finalized until our lease comes to an end July 5th, just sucks because it’s a total pain to change our life around to accommodate this.
