You have seen me post about this before, I know. I did it last year but since I just made a fresh new batch because we just ran out, I thought that it was a fabulous time to post it again and give my recap on the last one and repost the DIY because I love this stuff that much.
Homemade Laundry Detergent
1 4 lb 12 oz box Borax (2.15 kg or 76 oz)
1 4 lb box Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (1.81 kg)
1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda 55 oz (3 lb 7 oz)
3 bars of Fels-Naptha soap
3-3.5 lbs Oxy Clean or store brand Oxy Clean.
This round I used Up & Up OxyClean
(6 lb bucket and used about half) thanks to the fabulous
suggestion by Domestic Bella (she talks about her love for it here.).
**You can find all of these items in the detergent aisle at your local store.
**I also keep an extra bar of Fels-Naptha and a bottle of cheap dish soap for large greasy stains**
Use a 5 gallon bucket, and line it with a trash bag.
Either shred or grind up the bars of Fels-Naptha (I cut up the bars into smaller chunks and used our Kitchen Aid which was super easy and made the bar into little pellets – don’t stick the whole bar in there, it’s too large and will stop the blades from moving …. not that I have any experience with that or anything…)
Poor all of the ingredients into the trash-bag-lined bucket and either use your hands or a large cooking spoon (I used a spoon, I found it was less dusty), and mix up.
Your mixture will look something like this:
And you use 2 tbsp scoops per regular size load. 1 tbsp for a small load.
My last batch lasted us 6.5 months and we do a ton of laundry in our house, plus I shared a bit with friends.
So for …. right around $20.00 I get 6-9 months worth laundry done with a homemade laundry detergent that is gentle on my clothes but has awesome cleaning power, works for my husband who is sometimes sensitive to some laundry products and is gentle on my baby’s clothes and skin?
Soo worth it!
